The original source of the word "mathematics" is a Greek verb meaning "to understand" or "to learn". Mathematics is also, in essence, an art, but its aim is to make structures of thought which fit rationally and which are thus suitable for understanding and for learning. The "medium" of mathematical art is thus abstract symbolic thought, whereas what is usually called art works with a sensually perceptible medium.This is how the two kinds of art differ.
